10 Tips for Stunning Photo Collages
From choosing the right template to perfecting your colour palette — our top tips for creating photo collages that get noticed.
Creating a great photo collage isn't just about slapping photos together — it's about telling a story. Whether you're making a collage for social media, a gift, or a print, these 10 tips will help you create something you're proud of.
1. Start with the right template
The template sets the tone for everything. Grid templates work beautifully for equal-weight images, while creative layouts can add drama and movement to your composition.
2. Choose photos with a consistent colour palette
The most visually striking collages use photos that share similar tones, colours or moods. Try to stick to warm or cool tones — not both.
3. Use an odd number of photos
Odd numbers (3, 5, 7) feel more natural and dynamic than even numbers. The eye naturally finds a focal point in an odd-numbered arrangement.
4. Mind the spacing
Too much space between photos can feel disconnected; too little feels cluttered. Our templates are designed with optimal spacing, but you can adjust it in the editor.
5. Pick a complementary background colour
The background colour is one of the most powerful design choices. White creates a clean, modern feel. Dark backgrounds add drama. Try matching a colour from your photos.
6. Don't overcrowd it
Less is more. A collage with 4–6 well-chosen photos is almost always more impactful than one crammed with 20 images.
7. Keep a focal point
Design your collage so the eye is drawn to one or two hero images. Use size and position to create hierarchy.
8. Use the crop tool intentionally
How you crop each photo within its cell matters. Tight crops create intimacy; wider crops give context. Experiment with the pan and zoom controls in the editor.
9. Test multiple size variations
Our templates come with multiple size variants — square for Instagram, portrait for stories, landscape for prints. Always check how your collage looks in different aspect ratios before downloading.
10. Download at the right resolution
If you're printing, always download at the highest resolution. For web and social, a standard resolution is fine — and keeps the file size manageable.
